A gesture of support for bushfire victims
The Salvation Army has collected $166,000 from the New Zealand public to help those rebuilding their lives following the February bushfires in Victoria, Australia.
The money has been transferred to the Australian Salvation Army and the donation is being recognised at a function hosted by Australian High Commissioner Paul O’Sullivan this afternoon.
Salvation Army spokesman Major Robbie Ross says the money will go towards providing families, whose homes and possessions were destroyed by the fires, with furnishings, furniture and whiteware.
“We’ve seen community groups, schools, families and individuals coming to the aid of Australians who have suffered great loss and that concern for our neighbours is heartening,” he says.
The Australian Salvation Army was part of the initial fire response, alongside other agencies. Its work continues, providing cash, material aid and emotional support to those who survived the fires.
