The
Burn
“The Burn” is a new comedy written by Nic
Sampson and Joseph Moore, taking you beyond the tired
notions of screaming hounds and inferno and into the vastly
undiscovered and pettifogging world of retail hell… in
Hell.
Collin, a low-level demon has run Collin’s Rentals, a shabby store on the edge of St Blunt’s Chasm for 650 odd years, centuries before any good films had come out on VHS. As could be expected from a video store in Hell, the service isn’t great, the selection is limited, and the prices are aggravating. Business is not booming. Still, after hundreds of years of service Collin has hired an assistant: the amiable Marty, a film enthusiast from Otaki. Not so wise was his additional hiring of Felix, a loudmouth angel down on work exchange. Felix is having the time of his life in Hell, antagonizing Collin, trying to convince Marty to die and join him in Heaven, and letting off centuries of steam. Into the mix comes Felix’s new girlfriend, Laura, who may or may not be the daughter of Satan, and who Marty finds strangely alluring. All this and the small matter of the temperature. It keeps dropping.
“The Burn” stars Auckland actors Nic Sampson and Joseph Moore. In 2006, Nic was nominated for a Chapman Tripp award for Best Newcomer and since gone on to star as the Chip, the yellow one in “Power Rangers: Mystic Force” and alongside Geoffrey Rush in the upcoming fantasy/western “The Warrior’s Way.” Joseph played Bastabus, the white one in “Seven Periods with Mr. Gormsby” and got mostly edited out of Prince Caspian. Together they surprised Comedy Festival audiences last year with their hit show, “Tim & Andy: An Adventure”. Joining them this year is veteran actor and Chapman Tripp award winner Julian Wilson, famed for his performances as the dame in Roger Hall’s Christmas pantomimes.
