WELLINGTON
ROAR gallery is picking through the structures of our urban existence, bringing you the fresh vibes of two young Wellington artists, NYX and BiOHAzARD. This exhibition will be hooking them up with well known street artist Drypnz who has made his mark on Wellington since 2005.
Drypnz will be working straight onto the gallery walls, creating an onsite installation showcasing his style. There will also be work of his for sale which explores and mimics the human mind and its thought processes, exploring our interaction with one another, and our reactions to undetermined situations that we find ourselves in.
Born in Portsmouth, England in 1987, Drypnz has lived in places such as the Marshall Islands, Israel, Aruba, St. Croix in the USVI. All these stops have affected what he is producing now … “express yourself where you want and when you want, or we will see the end of our culture too soon to comprehend “ says Drypnz.
All your base are belong to us – BiOHAzARD
Take a step back into the 90’s as you enter BiOHAzARD’s idealised adolescent’s bedroom. All your base are belong to us is influenced by BiOHAzARD’s love for Sega games, science fiction, comics and building airfix model kits as a kid. (And no, our grammar ain’t wrong; this title is a classic Japanese transliteration for a computer game turned into an internet phenomenon).
“I've always been interested in how things work, and was always worrying my toys, and parents, when I discovered how to unscrew things with a butter knife. I would attempt to repair, make improvements and most important, make my own stuff for free. This hasn’t changed; everything I create is a mix of art, engineering and super glue.”
Come experience 3d constructions from the guts and entrails of old and used toys and electronics, as BiOHAzARD portrays a naive world of security with tongue ' n cheek reference to the 2001 internet phenomenon.
No Rest for the Wicked –
NYX
Spray paint and stencils are high on NYX’s agenda, but she does have a love of all kinds of paints – especially making big messes!
No Rest for the Wicked explores ideas of Organic vs. Inorganic, Interior vs. Exterior space, and Fantasy vs. Reality. The works convey a depth created through a build up of textures & different surface treatments. The work emerges from NYX’s interest in the Japanese cartoon styles of Manga and Anime, mixed with images from her imagination, drawings, photographs and appropriated images. NYX explains, “Some of the compositions and ideas have come to me in dreams, or in thoughts as I was lying awake at night, there's ' No Rest for the Wicked '”.
This exhibition is packed, featuring other artists - Michael R. Cox, Peter Marment, and Thomas Owers. If you like low-brow art – you shouldn’t miss this show!
