SuperGold card benefits worth about a dollar a day: survey
SuperGold card users save about a dollar a day on average, according to a recent online poll carried out by the 50-plus
website GrownUps.co.nz.
Almost 500 GrownUps members who said they were SuperGold cardholders reported how often they used their cards, and what
the value was to them. GrownUps co-founder Richard Poole says many respondents apparently struggled to find businesses
that supported the card.
“Despite recent comments in the media that seem to suggest packs of pensioners are jamming the aisles of off-peak public
transport services around the country, those responding to our survey said they saved on average about a dollar a day,
with three-quarters only using the card once a month, and more than a third saying they wouldn’t miss it if they no
longer had it.”
Mr Poole said comments included with responses to the survey suggested many SuperGold card holders in smaller towns felt
they were worse off than their metropolitan counterparts, but respondents from across the country all cited the lack of
major retailers and providers of essential services such as electricity and phone services.
Key poll findings
36% of respondents had never used their SuperGold card and 38% used it only once per month
60% of card holders saved less than $10 per month. 88% saved up to $30 per month
56% said they’d be affected if the card was taken away, while 37% said they would not be affected
