Exhibition and Sale Of Artworks

15 - 19 APRIL 2009

Exhibition and Sale Of Artworks

Bette Armstrong & Bea Arthur

Bette Armstrong and Bea Arthur were partners for over 57 years and icons for many Wellington lesbians. The Armstrong and Arthur Charitable Trust was set up by the late Bea Arthur to support lesbian community activities in the Wellington region.

During their lives Bette and Bea never went overseas but they spent many holidays travelling around this country and painting the beautiful scenery they encountered. They were also members of the Wellington Art Club. There are over 300 paintings that have been held in storage since their deaths. The paintings will be sold and the money will be added to the Trust funds. Photographs on display will provide glimpses into Bette and Bea’s lives as will a DVD of memories that will accompany the exhibition.

Opening 5.30pm Tuesday 14 April by Kapiti Mayor Jenny Rowan and musician Sue Alexander who will play some of Bette and Bea’s favourite tunes.

Dr Alison Laurie will give a Biographical Talk at 6.00pm – 7.00pm on Friday 17 April. Dr Laurie’s talk will be based on interviews she did with Bette and Bea (April 17 will be Bette's 100th birthday!).

Nicholas does what is usually referred to as Outsider Art; which is very ‘in’ at the moment. His grandmother does rather traditional figurative paintings with no social or political content; which is rather ‘out’. So, who’s out and who’s in?

In this exhibition Nicholas has concentrated on his Olympic paintings, and models of significant boats. Janet is exhibiting paintings about travel, grandchildren growing up, and one of her great pleasures, swimming.
