Four things to keep you safe on the roads

Media Release: 9 April 2009

Four things to keep you safe on the roads this Easter

The AA is urging motorists to take care and be patient on the roads this holiday weekend.

Mike Noon, AA Motoring Affairs General Manager says to help keep them and their loved ones safe, there are four simple things for drivers to remember this Easter.

“Firstly, ensure your tyres are properly inflated – correct tyre pressure is important when braking and cornering,” says Mr Noon.

“Secondly, remember to keep your following distances. Remember the two second rule in dry conditions, and the need to increase the following distance to four seconds if road conditions are wet.”

“Thirdly, the sun is low at this time of year so be careful to avoid sunstrike when the sun is in front of you. Cleaning your windscreen will also make it easier to see in difficult conditions. Turning your headlights on and dipping them will help other motorists see you if the sun is behind you.

“Finally, the roads will be busy this weekend. Patience goes a long way and remember it is better to arrive late, than not to arrive at all because of an accident.”

Mr Noon says “let’s try and keep road fatalities and serious injuries to an absolute minimum this Easter. Imagine how wonderful it would be if Tuesday comes and everyone who has been on our roads is still safe and well!”
