Celebrate World Earth Day With Nickelodeon
Nickelodeon are empowering kids around the world to take action for the environment by connecting them to energy-saving,
earth-friendly activities in their everyday lives. The Big Green Help is a worldwide initiative designed by Nickelodeon
to help kids everywhere find simple, positive ways to help protect the environment every day. There are so many
confusing messages out there about why the environment needs our help – but one thing is clear – kids can make a
difference!
Kiwi kids can become fully involved in the initiative with Nickelodeon New Zealand’s dedicated website -
http://www.biggreenhelp.co.nz. Here kids can learn more, get helpful tips and play original green-themed games online.
The site is home to daily tips for maintaining a “green” lifestyle, a glossary of “green” terms that will help kids
understand how they can help save the planet (i.e. carbon footprint, renewable energy), a ‘How Green Are You?’ Quiz and
heaps of games. A key feature is the international Big Green Help Global Challenge tracker that shows kids around the
world pledging to do their bit to save CO2. Since The Big Green Help’s launch, kids from all around the world have
pledged to do various things in their everyday lives to help save over 671,830 tonnes of CO2!
New Zealand kids were selected by Nickelodeon from Auckland’s Pigeon Mountain School and Meadowbank School to show on
air what they’re doing to make a difference. Two mini enviro-showcases will screen on Nickelodeon on and around World
Earth Day demonstrating the students’ efforts to do their bit to help the environment. “We were incredibly impressed
with the know-how and can-do attitudes of these Kiwi kids and their schools – it just goes to show that New Zealand kids
really are doing their bit to address local and global environmental problems,” says Lauren Nola, Manager of Nickelodeon
NZ.
Nickelodeon has an impressive line up of special World Earth Day programming planned for Wednesday 22 April (see below).
A long awaited highlight is the NZ premiere of The Big Green Challenge Documentary starring acclaimed adventurer and
environmentalist, David de Rothschild. Having teamed up with Nickelodeon to empower kids everywhere to tackle climate
change, the documentary challenges kids to find every day evidence of global warming and then helps them to decide what
can be done to combat it. At just 29, David de Rothschild is a household environmental name, having visited some of the
world’s most remote and fragile regions, as well as setting up ‘Adventure Ecology’ - an independently run organisation
aimed at children that uses adventure, education and the arts to address global sustainability issues. “Having embarked
on numerous adventures to some of our earth’s most spectacular, dangerous and environmentally challenged locations; I
can safely say that when it comes to conserving and protecting our unique planet, there has never been a bigger
adventure,” he says.
“The Big Green Help campaign shows that it’s our every day actions that will help - it only requires a little more
understanding, commitment and motivation in order for each and every one of us to create the solutions our planet craves
and become Agents of Change.”
