Signed Indian cricket shirts to aid charity

Kiwi cricket fans who have been impressed by displays of cricketing prowess by the touring Indian team have the chance to own two cricket shirts worn by sporting legends Rahul Dravid and Dinesh Karthik, and at the same time, support slum dwellers in India.

The shirts signed by the 2006 touring team are to be auctioned on Trade Me by aid organisation TEAR Fund. The money will support slum development partner Asha working to improve conditions for slum dwellers in Delhi.

TEAR Fund event’s manager Andrew Robinson said this is a chance for the Kiwi public to own a piece of Indian cricketing history from one of the best teams this century has seen. This is also likely to be the last time Kiwis will see cricket legend and captain Rahul Dravid playing on New Zealand soil, he said.

One shirt was worn by Dravid during the India-West Indies One-Day Series, held between May and July of 2006. It was worn on the first One-Day international, which India won with only one ball to spare. Rahul Dravid was named man of the match, scoring 105 runs off 102 balls.

The second is a test shirt worn by Indian wicket keeper Dinesh Karthik in the fourth game of the India-West Indies Test Series, held between May and July of 2006. India drew the first three games and won the fourth test by 49 runs to take the series. It was their first test win in West Indies for 34 years.

The shirt has been signed by the entire victorious Indian team (16 signatures), which included Rahul Dravid, MS Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh, Anil Kumble, VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag, and Yuvraj Singh.
