ARTSPACE is pleased to participate in the Auckland festival 2009 with the exhibition MASH UP, guest curated by Julia
Rodrigues. Julia is an independent curator and art critic based in Sao Paulo and Copenhagen. MASH UP embodies an
international flavour with eleven different artists or artist groups from countries as diverse as Denmark, Japan,
Argentina and including local artists Finn Ferrier and Shigeyuki Kihara.
³ARTSPACE is thrilled to host this dynamic exhibition; it¹s an important contribution to Auckland festival, and a
celebration of contemporary diversity. The blending of cultures that MASH UP addresses is locally relevant here in
Karangahape Road.²Says ARTSPACE Director Emma Bugden.
How much of one culture can be communicated by another? MASH UP investigates processes of translation and the impact of
contact between diverse cultures. Curator Julia Rodrigues describes the background to the exhibition:
The current intense and accelerated contact between cultures - through migration, communication media and technology -
makes the focus on translation timely, understood not just as textual or literary but also as a cultural process.
MASH UP is presented as part of Auckland festival 2009, and has been awarded the Premio Curadoria 2008 Centro Cultural
Sao Paulo. Artists Olof Olsson, Finn Ferrier and Shigeyuki Kihara will be available for interviews.
