Circus performers to circumnavigate the wharf
Wellington City Council’s NZCT Summer City festival continues to churn out fantastic events. From tonight, Fuse Circus Productions will wow the crowds with their latest outdoor circus performance – The Navigators.
The City Council’s Events Programmer, Rebecca Hardie, says Fuse Productions did a spectacular job last year with Gravity and Other Myths and “this year promises a similarly high calibre of stunts and thrills.”
“Some people might even feel a bit burnt out from all the events that have taken place this summer, but know this – we’ve saved some of the best for last. The Navigators is on every night for over a week, with matinees at the weekends for those with young children. You have no excuse but to show up for an hour of dazzling acrobatics and theatrics!”
Fuse Productions’ Tom Beauchamp says The Navigators differs a bit from Gravity and Other Myths in the way that they have incorporated narrative, character and theatrical development into this show.
“It is one big nautical adventure. The characters embark on the good ship The Dry Rot and sail the seas in search of treasure and adventure. The Navigators reflects our real life voyage, we are leaping out into new areas of performance, learning new skills and adding depth and colour to the already exciting performance medium of circus.”
Tom is one of five performers in the hour-long show. These superb acrobatic athletes will have audiences under their spell as they nonchalantly dangle from ropes, climb to dizzying heights and throw themselves into the air.
“We are no strangers to testing the boundaries of strength and physical performance,” says Tom. “And we have been very fortunate to be working with the acclaimed theatrical director, Willem Wassenaar. He has helped us to develop amazing new techniques and dramatic circus tricks for this show.”
The Navigators is a koha event, and takes place every evening at 8pm from now until Saturday 7 March (except for Monday 2 March). Matinees take place on Saturday 28 February and Saturday 7 March at 2pm.
