Limited Edition Kapa Haka Book For Te Matatini 2009
A limited edition publication ‘Nga Tatangi a Te Whare Karioi’ captures the diverse realities of iwi represented by kapa haka groups performing at Te Matatini National Kapa Haka Festival 2009.
Released today, Festival chairman Selwyn
Parata described the
120-page book featuring selected
groups and their performance compositions – as a
‘must-have’ for aspiring composers and those dedicated
to te reo Maori and the Maori performing arts.
“Nga Tatangi a Te Whare Karioi reflects the unique sounds and dialects of each iwi and highlights issues and experiences specific to each of them. The compositions contained in it, also recognize esteemed figures who are commemorated in the publication for the significant contribution they have made to kapa haka over time.”
Mr. Parata said historically tribal compositions performed at major ceremonies and occasions were well documented, “as they captured significant moments in time and today they remain an authoritative record and valuable reference for us.”
“This beautiful book elucidates the talent of current composers striving to emulate the par excellence of former composing greats. It shows the distinct styles, intonations, and prestigious dance of a great people.”
Copies of Nga Tatangi a Te Whare Karioi are available on site at Te Matatini National Kapa Haka Festival 2009 priced at $25.
