History 2009
“We are pleased to announce the 2009
Awards in History recipients,” said Neill Atkinson, Acting
Chief Historian, Ministry for Culture and Heritage.
The New Zealand History Research Trust Fund awarded 10 diverse historical projects, ranging from pets and people to New Zealand mountaineers, from the NZ Truth newspaper to Maori ships and the Patea Freezing Company.
“The Awards are given to individuals or groups undertaking projects that will significantly enhance the understanding of New Zealand’s history”.
A total of $100,000 will be allocated to the 10 recipients of the awards.
The successful recipients for 2009 are:

Hospital - $10,000
• Ian Dougherty (Dunedin), A
biography of Rutherford Waddell - $12,000
• David
Harrowfield (Oamaru), ‘Call of the mountains’: a history
of New Zealand mountaineering - $12,000
• Paul Meredith
(Wellington), ‘Homeward bound’: a journey with King Te
Rata to England - $8,000
• Hilary and John Mitchell
(Nelson), ‘Nga Tupuna Tuturu’: the founding ancestors -
$6,000
• Paul Monin (Waikeke Island), Maori Ships
1840-70: a case study of Maori engagement with colonial
capitalism - $8,000
• Bill O’Brien (Mosgiel),
‘Takahe, trophies and tonsils’: the extraordinary life
of Dr Geoffrey Orbell - $8,000
• Russell Standing
(Hawera), ‘The works’: a history of Patea Freezing
Company, 1883-1982 - $12,000
• Nancy Swarbrick
(Wellington), ‘Pets and people’: a history of companion
animals and their owners in New Zealand -
$12,000
• Redmer Yska (Wellington), ‘Thunderer’:
the rise and fall of NZ Truth, New Zealand’s first press
giant - $12,000.
New Zealand’s History Research Trust Fund is administered by the Ministry for Culture and Heritage.
