Time to party

It is time for New Zealanders to party. The election is over and dusted, with a new Prime Minister and a new team set on moving the country forward. The sun has come out, and despite gloomy international conditions, most New Zealanders are in a position to party and have a holiday over the summer season. This was the message from the Hospitality Association's Chief Executive Bruce Robertson, speaking to F&B magazine.

Interest rates have come down, petrol prices are down and tax cuts are kicking in. Most New Zealanders have still got secure jobs and will have in the foreseeable future, and now have a few extra dollars in their pockets. This summer, right here right now, is a great place to kick start the New Zealand economy. If every New Zealander decided to take the opportunity to go out, meet up with friends, have a meal and a few drinks, or see a piece of New Zealand they are yet to visit, then the globally imposed pall over New Zealand would start to lift.

If we do not endeavour to kick start the New Zealand economy with some confidence, we are as a nation at risk of spiralling further in to recession. That is not good for hospitality businesses, or indeed any business, neither is it any good for all New Zealanders. More jobs will be at risk and more businesses will fail the more conservative New Zealanders become in their spending habits.

All New Zealanders can play their part in getting New Zealand moving, while rewarding themselves with a good time and seeing more of New Zealand, concludes Mr Robertson.
