Dance music is alive and well this New Year!

Dates: 29th December 2008, 30th December 2008, 31st December 2008, 1 January 2009
Venue: Waiohika Estate and BW Campgrounds, Gisborne
Tickets: www.rhythmandvines.co.nz

This year event goers can expect the very best of dance, electronica and all other kinds of bustling beats to take them from the 29th December, right through to the first sunrise of 2009! Across all three party days, Rhythm and Vines will feature the best local and international acts picked for their ability to turn Waiohika Estate into the biggest dance floor in the country.

Leading the dance music charge at R&V is none other than the godfather of dance music, a veteran of acid house and a champion of techno, Carl Cox! It was Cox who helped found rave music and was one of the key figures who made Ibiza what it is today. A giant of a man musically and physically, if he isn’t using both hands to create monster beats on his decks he’s pumping the air with his fists and bringing the crowd up with his passionate enthusiasm. With a radio show that reaches a two million strong global audience, Carl Cox is a big deal! Catch his set just after midnight on the 31st where Cox will bring in the first moments of 2009 – you don’t want to miss this one!

German electro-house duo Digitalism were founded in Hamburg in 2004 and their reputed live shows have all the energy of a wild force of nature. Digitalism has remixed tracks for The Presets, Tom Vek, The Futureheads, Daft Punk, Tiga, Klaxons, White Stripes, Monk, Depeche Mode, Cut Copy and many others, including a re-edit of "Fire in Cairo" by The Cure (entitled "Digitalism in Cairo"). They know where the party is at, and with a cool, calculated approach to all things musical will be an essential R&V artist to watch.

Dance music fans will be counting the days until they see Busy P (aka Pedro Winter) the French electro house DJ reputed as currently one of the world’s finest. With his no-nonsense partner in crime DJ Mehdi by his side, this French electro house DJ is reputed as one of the world’s finest. Dirgey effected bass, sonic sprinklings and a mixture between instrumental grooves and tracks featuring guest vocalists combining hip hop house and everything in between. Busy P revolutionised the dance scene with his label Ed Banger records, which is the home of some of the world’s best electro including Justice, Sebastian and Mr Oizo. He is also responsible for managing French electro punks Daft Punk. A night time set from this dance-floor great will be one to remember!

UK based Adam Freeland is a DJ/producer synonymous with big, bolshie, break-beat electronica. With the nod from the likes of Sasha, Carl Cox and the Chemical Brothers, Freeland’s reputation precedes him. Having been a regular performer at the Coachella Festival, and stopping through New Zealand on the way to some Ozzie festival slots, R&V will be the prime time to see the man unleash his turntable fury.

With a number 1 Australian record under their belt Melbourne three-piece Cut Copy make rock music to dance to and dance music to rock to. Their most recent record In Ghost Colours is one of the finest alternative releases of 2008 and features the hit song So Haunted. Their sound has been described as “similar to former R&V guests New Young Pony Club”, and their live show second to none! Cut Copy will be one of the festival’s most anticipated guests this year.

Looking for an electro-clash mash-up DJ sensation? Look no further than Australian prince of the decks Ajax! Championed by the likes of Mylo and Tiga as one of the biggest emerging talents in his field, the former University Art lecturer is known for an unorthodox but scintillating ‘cut and paste’ mixing style and has mixed records for the best, including Ministry Of Sound. Big things are gonna happen from this man of the moment.
In 1997 at the age of 15 Montreal based DJ/turntablist A-Trak shocked the world by winning the DMCs World DJ Championship. He was both the youngest and first ever Canadian to win the competition. He has since won five world championships (the first DJ to ever achieve this) and is the current tour DJ for Kanye West. Another string to his bow, he’s the co-founded of the record label Fool’s Gold which boasts the crème de la crème of club music.

We have a strong local entourage of producers and DJs to keep the festival grooving. Psy-trance duo Antix have a progressive sound which has graced clubs and festivals worldwide and played to crowds in excess of 10,000 and performed live in over 25 countries.

It’s been a few years since legendary DJ Dick ‘Magik’ Johnson rocked his residency at infamous Manchester club the Hacienda, but his infectious house mixes are still regarded as the cream of the crop! R&V are proud to have Dick back showcasing tunes from his highly reputed second album ‘You Are Sound’ and being responsible for keeping the R&V show bangin’and heavin’. And of course Tongan beat merchant Soane is no stranger to R&V, he will return to deliver custom made deep house Vava’u style!

Known as one of the hardest working producer/DJs around, Tim Richards’ deep electronic and techno is intelligent and elegant, sweet and sour and has been played in clubs the world over. Dark drum’n’bass overlords and break-beat freaks Antiform have recently worked with Tiki Taane and show no mercy for those who don’t have the staying power to keep their asses on the floor, prepare for the best in NZ high beats per minute.

Rhythm and Vines would like to remind all music fans to come armed with their dancing shoes!
