Catholic Matchmaker website: a safe place for Catholics to meet Catholics
Catholic Matchmaker New Zealand made a ground-breaking announcement to the media in August 2007. They became the first
Catholic matchmaker site to receive official support from the Catholic Church. Archbishop John Dew of Wellington,
followed by the other Catholic Bishops in New Zealand, gave permission to promote Catholic Matchmaker in their dioceses.
Some Australian bishops have also given permission to promote this service.
Since Catholic Matchmaker was launched just over a year ago, a number of changes have been put in place.
The old website at www.CatholicMatchmaker.co.nz has been removed and replaced by a whole new look website. This can be
found at www.meetacatholic.com and there is redirection to the new site from the old url.
“We feel that our new website is really living up to the expectation of a social networking site, where people can
access a range of services, blogs, forums, groups, chat, private messaging etc, all for the one low cost” says Glen
Omvig, administrator.
Catholic Matchmaker has also been welcomed in Australia. Catholic Dioceses of Geraldton in Western Australia, Townsville
and Ballarat have now endorsed Catholic Matchmaker and intend to promote it within their Dioceses. Catholic Matchmaker
intends to branch out wherever bishops give permission for them to promote membership and to offer the privacy that
Catholics want when searching for their marriage partner.
“All Australian dioceses have now received a letter from Catholic Matchmaker, and those which have responded are
featured on the website stating that permission for promotion has been given within their dioceses," said Clare Omvig,
administrator. It is understood that the Australian Catholic Bishop’s Conference will discuss it at their next meeting
in November, according to Mrs Omvig.
Catholic Matchmaker celebrated their first wedding in Christchurch in May. This has raised their profile, and their
presence online has been steadily increasing.
The administrators of the site are confident that Catholic Matchmaker is now offering a comparable and competitive
service for those seeking privacy and security while searching for their soul mate.
