Pensioner In Pyjamas Wins $316,071 On
Lotto First Division
A Howick pensioner raced to his local dairy on Sunday morning in his pyjamas and dressing gown to buy a newspaper and make sure his six Lotto numbers had actually won him First Division.
“I take the same numbers every week and have done for over 20 years so when I watched the draw on Saturday night I wasn’t sure if I was dreaming when I saw my six numbers come up,” says the pensioner who wishes to remain anonymous.
“I don’t have the internet or even teletext and I tried to tell the wife that my six numbers had come up but she didn’t believe me and said I’d had too much home brew,” jokes the winner.
“So first thing Sunday morning, I raced up to the local dairy in my pyjamas and dressing gown to get the newspaper and make sure I was correct,” he says.
At the Paper Plus Lotto counter, the winner was greeted by a happy Lotto girl who told him their store had sold a winning First Division ticket.
“I looked at her and had the biggest grin on my face and she turned to the manager and said, ‘I think the winner is here’.
“It was a fantastic feeling to be in the store that sold the winning ticket when I got my ticket checked, they were really happy for me,” says the pensioner.
The winner has five grandchildren and jokes that he’s ready to hand the winnings over to his family, who have already spent it for him.
“It’s a lovely feeling to win and for me and the wife to know that the next few years are financially taken care of.”
