‘Perfectly Illustrated’Dance of Pacific Issues

 

‘Dontfeedthemanfish’ is a contemporary dance work that highlightsthe problems facing Pacific Island nations as a result ofglobal warming, unemployment and overpopulation. The dance is an inspirational piece, voicing issuesand questioning responsibilities fordestructive lifestyles that are affecting cultures and nature.

 

Whitireia graduates Crystal Sciascia, Falani Kalolo, Tangata Tangatatuta'I and current dancestudent John-Matai Ferguson performed in this work at Bats professional theatre in Wellington. The performance was part of thefestivalDance Your Socks Off!that ran from Wednesday 17September to Saturday 20 September. 

“The work is a perfect illustration of the skills that Whitireia produces, and an embodiment of so many of the ideas we seek to instil in students” says Abby Richardson, digital technician at Whitireia.

Live Event and Sound Productionstudentsfrom Whitireia, Kate Aldridge-Tuara and Anton Barclay, were also involved in the festival. They workedas the audio-visual technicians on a piece called ‘Eye of a Dancer’. The students projected images and pre-recorded film clips of the dancer’s history onto the stage while the performance took place.
