42BELOW brings world's leading stencil artists to Auckland
Street art is a hot topic on the international art scene and stencil art in particular has seen a rise in esteem. 42BELOW has decided someone should celebrate this growing art form with an event unique to Auckland.
42BELOW, in association with Sideroom.com and Connect The Dots, is proud to present The Month of Street Art, a collaborative exhibition that will showcase the works of renowned local and international stencil artists. Kicking off 6pm Thursday 28 August in the 42BELOW Space at 20 Customs Street East, the Month of Street Art will feature two exhibitions running back to back.
The first exhibition 'Future Shock' (opening 6pm Thursday 28 August) is the final show on the Australasian tour of internationally acclaimed artists Logan Hicks, HAHA, and Vexta. It will be the first New Zealand exhibition for all three artists, a fact that only heightens the anticipation amongst local artists and collectors who have been inspired and influenced by these prolific stencilers.
New York based Logan Hicks is widely regarded as a pioneer of the stencil art movement. As part of 'Future Shock' Logan will be painting a live mural on the windows of the 42BELOW Space. Joining him will be HAHA (Regan Tamanui, originally from Hamilton) - one of the most recognised names in the Melbourne street art scene and Vexta (Melbourne) - a world renowned female stencil artist with a lengthy exhibition history.
The Month of Street Art continues 6pm Friday 12 September with 'Public Access' and is a follow up exhibition to the hugely successful 2007 show of the same name.
'Public Access' features works by prominent local street art crew Cut Collective. Comprised of four central artists including Component, Flox, Trust Me and Enforce 1, Cut Collective has established a firm reputation in the Auckland street art scene. Their work ranges from commissioned artworks to gallery exhibitions, curation, public murals and workshops. Local artists Peepshow, Kool and Gasp join the Cut Collective crew to round out the stellar 'Public Access' lineup.
"42BELOW is proud to bring this unique art form off the streets and into the collective consciousness of Auckland's art community," says 42 BELOW Marketing Manager Rowan Dean.
42BELOW is also giving away a Logan Hicks painting valued at $3500. Visit the gallery during the month (28 August - 27 September) to enter the draw.
The Month of Street Art offers an unprecedented insight into stencil art - a technique that has revolutionised the quality of artwork seen on streets around the world. Curious art lovers are invited to come down to the 42BELOW Space and see what all the fuss is about, you've got a whole month after all.
