Food Session Typically New Zealand!

Three courses, three writers, three entertaining stories. As the first session for The Press Christchurch Writers' Festival the combination of writers and foodies will be a sure hit. Diners will eat from courses with recipes selected by different writers and prepared by the restaurant's chefs as the writers entertain with tales of delicious trails and adventures!

Kate Fraser - Cooking Times

Kate Fraser, award-winning food writer and food editor for The Press, in a salute to nostalgia, has compiled a collection of recipes and anecdotes from the kitchens of a series of fictitious characters. From the hard times of the 1930s through the war years and the changes of the 1960s to the 'Slow Food' movement of the present day, the stories in Cooking Times present an overview of the development of our national food culture.

Kate Fraser has chosen a classic entrée from the 70s - Prawn, Grapefruit and Cucumber Cocktail as a starter for this feast of nostalgia.

Richard Till - Kiwi Kitchen

Richard Till's awarding winning television series Kiwi Kitchen was a quirky irreverent celebration of the last 150 years of kiwi cuisine. Discovering dishes that refused to die with their decade, he travelled the length and breadth of the country, meeting local characters who cooked the food we remember so fondly. Looking at the origin of the dishes, he discovered why it has become part of our cultural identity.

His subsequent book has become a big hit, with Richard's humorous observations run alongside the recipes. For this lunch he has chosen the main course of

Mutton back straps with scalloped potatoes, aioli and green vegetables.

David Veart - First Catch Your Weka

David Veart, Department of Conservation historian and archaeologist, owns a substantial collection of cook books, and almost all those referred to in his own first major book, First Catch Your Weka: A Story of New Zealand Cooking (due

from Auckland University Press in September 2008), come from

his own collection, which, he says, "I have been accumulating

since I first became responsible for feeding myself sometime in

the early 1970s. From the compulsory Edmonds Cookery Book given to me by

my mother when I left home the collection has grown."

David Veart provides the recipe for the dessert, a wonderful comfort food we can all associate with, Lemon Delicious Pudding.
