Tamas Vesmas Celebrates 25 years in NZ with Silver Anniversary Tour

Twenty-five years ago Romanian pianist Tamas Vesmas arrived in New Zealand. Chamber Music New Zealand celebrates the silver anniversary of Tamas’ arrival in New Zealand with a six centre recital tour in September. The tour begins in Invercargill on Sunday 7 September, before heading to Christchurch, Napier, Auckland, Wellington, and Palmerston North. Born in Romania, Tamas began studying piano and composition at the age of 10 and by age 14 his career as a soloist had begun with recitals and appearances throughout Romania. He continued his studies in Paris where he won numerous prizes and performed in major venues.

Throughout his career he has won numerous prizes and performed in major venues in more than 20 countries.

Since his arrival in New Zealand in 1983 he has toured New Zealand extensively as a soloist, conductor and chamber musician, frequently performing in the Chamber Music New Zealand concert series and with the country’s major orchestras. He has appeared in the Christchurch Arts Festival and twice at the New Zealand International Arts Festival and has recorded more than 100 concerts with Radio New Zealand Concert.

Tamas is currently Associate Professor of Piano Studies and Chamber Music at The University of Auckland and he regularly travels to Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States for recitals and to conduct master classes.

His programme for the Chamber Music New Zealand tour includes Beethoven’s last piano works, Bagatelles Opus 126; Schubert’s A minor Piano Sonata; the energetic Improvisations on Hungarian Peasant Songs by Béla Bartók and an exquisite set of musical impressions – Book Two of Debussy’s Preludes. Tamas Vesmas performs in Invercargill, Christchurch, Napier, Auckland, Wellington and Palmerston North from September 7 to 17.
