Cello Recital by Moky Gibson-Lane

On Thursday 7 August 2008 cellist Mok-Hyun Gibson-Lane will give an evening recital, accompanied on piano by Donald Nicolson, at Central Baptist Church, 46 Boulcott Street, Wellington. Entry to the concert is by donation and the programme includes works by Schumann, Boccherini, Haydn and Paganini-Rossini. Free car parks are available to concert-goers opposite the venue, in the Boulcott Street Car Park Building. Following the concert a light supper will be provided.

Moky lives in Berlin, Germany, and is currently a contract player with the Berlin Staatskapelle Orchestra, conducted by Daniel Barenboim. She has recently formed a quintet with the concertmaster and other members of the Berlin Philharmonic and upcoming engagements include concerts in Crakow, Seoul and Berlin.

Moky completed her Masters degree in musical performance (cello) with Lynn Harrell at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice Unversity, Houston, in 2004. That same year, she was awarded Second Prize in the New Zealand Young Musician of the Year Competition. She is a native of Wellington, New Zealand, and attended Samuel Marsden Colleagiate School (1996-1998).

She has been playing cello since she was 9 years and her first teachers were Kathy Paterson (1990-1992), Judith Hyatt (1992-1993) and Dr Rolf Gjelsten (1994-1998).

She commenced her Bachelor of Music degree at Canterbury University in 1999, studying cello with Dr Alexander Ivashkin and Natalia Pavlutskaya and then transferred to Victoria University, Wellington in 2000, to complete a B.Mus (First Class Honours) in 2002 studying with Euan Murdoch (2000-2002).

She was Principal Cellist with the Victoria University Orchestra (2000-2002) and in 2002 she was the second recipient of a Patricia Pratt Scholarship in Musical Performance awarded by Victoria University. The scholarship is administered by the New Zealand Vice-Chancellors' Committee and has resulted in a number of talented young New Zealanders pursuing musical studies in the United States.

Moky has been the recipient of many music prizes. These include the Hanan Exhibition Award in 1995 and the inaugural Duke of Kent Award for Music in 1996, both awards being from Trinity College of Music, London. The latter prize included an opportunity to attend the Dartington International Summer Music School where she received tuition from Karina Georgian and Matthew Barley. In 2000, she won the Victoria University of Wellington Concerto Competition and received the Alex Lindsay Memorial Award (1999, 2003). In 2001 she took the Victoria Duo Competition and was Outstanding Performer at the Victoria University Composers' Competition. In 2004/2005 she won the Barbara Finlayson Scholarship. She has been a Substitute Section Player, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra since 2001.

Donald Nicolson, who will accompany Moky on the piano, is a New Zealand-born harpsichordist who has recently returned to the Southern Hemisphere, having completed studies under Ton Koopman and Tini Mathot at the Royal Conservatorium in the Hague, the Netherlands. He focussed especially on the interpretation of the Elizabethan Virginalist English School, but also the music of 17th Century France. Donald continues to enjoy a varied and diverse career on both sides of the Tasman, in performances ranging from the Baroque, to contemporary ensembles, to symphonic orchestras, to the recording studio for Film soundtracks.
