Fresh Gallery Otara presents exhibition of Pacific art
from USA
Well-known for profiling local Manukau artists and grass-roots collaborative projects, Fresh Gallery Otara will have a special international Pacific art exhibition on show from 8 August.
The exhibition, Missionary Positions: An Illustrated Story of American Samoa, is by California-based Samoan painter, poet and film-maker, Dan Taulapapa McMullin.
Mr McMullin’s work is known for being strongly narrative and historically informed, with his paintings linking in closely to his writing and film-making practices.
The concepts in his artwork draw on Samoan cultural tradition, history and the impacts of colonisation and fa'afafine (transgender) experiences. His painting style is beautiful and whimsical, often depicting dreamscapes or moments of human thoughtfulness.
From an award-winning artist in the United States, this new site-specific body of work will feature paintings, multi- media works and installation.
Mr McMullin will be participating in the 10th Festival of Pacific Arts in Pago Pago, American Samoa before coming to Auckland to hold his solo exhibition at Fresh Gallery Otara.
The exhibition will open on Thursday 7 August from 6–8pm and will run until 30 August.
