Steel Skeletons opens tomorrow night!

Homegrown music and dynamic dance await Wellington audiences tomorrow night, when the New Zealand School of Dance Choreographic Season, Steel Skeletons, bursts onto the Te Whaea stage. The fresh new production kicks off during NZ Music Month and features music by some of this country’s leading composers, DJ’s and groups.

Steel Skeletons gives Wellington audiences the opportunity to see the next generation of dance stars in action as they collaborate with Entertainment Technology and Costume Construction students from Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School.

Spanning styles from jazz to electronica, Steel Skeletons weaves together music by kiwi musicians Rhian Sheehan, Salmonella Dub, percussion group Strike, Wellington-based band Carousel, Pitch Black and many others. Contemporary dance students from the New Zealand School of Dance have responded by creating powerful dance works which together form a one hour extravaganza of contemporary dance.

“There is a wealth of kiwi music around that makes an inspiring soundtrack to dance,” says Paula Steeds-Huston, Artistic Coordinator of Steel Skeletons. “New Zealand musicians – like their dancer counterparts – often work collaboratively, which in essence is what Choreographic Season is all about.”

New Zealand Music Month began in 2001 as a means of boosting the visibility and success of New Zealand music. Each May, kiwi music is showcased on radio and television and in live performances throughout the country. For the New Zealand School of Dance students, NZ Music Month is a great opportunity to get acquainted with local music talent and use it as a starting point for their annual Choreographic Season.

NZ Music Month is a partnership between the NZ Music Commission and a number of other organisations including songwriters' association APRA, Independent Music NZ, NZ On Air, the Radio Broadcasters Association and the Recording Industry Association of NZ.

Steel Skeletons is at Te Whaea Theatre, Wellington from 30 May – 7 June.
