It was cold and clear last night (Tuesday 6 May) at the new arts building on the edge of Porirua Harbour. As far as you can get from the steamy, city environment of Manila – but the artwork, video, performances and people, including Philippine Ambassador to New Zealand Bienvenido Te Jano had made the return trip, completing a project that set Manila alight.
Ambassador Te Jano spoke to an invited audience which included Porirua mayor Jenny Brash, of the profound effect of the Whitireia fashion, music, artwork and jewellery on the Philippines’ creative community. “The similarities and potential for links between the cultures is large.” As the heart of Red Hot From New Zealand Week in Manila, Whitireia staff and students had provided DJ music events, a fashion show, jewellery design exhibition and workshops in creative practices.
Edited excerpts of the Manila fashion show were screened, DJ Raw, Whitireia Performing Arts and Cathy Livermore performed in a fast paced programme that surprised and delighted the guests.
“The value of the Whitireia programme is huge said Porirua Mayor Jenny Brash. It’s a terrific resource for the huge amount of talent in this city and plays an important part in our development.”
