CEO Appointed For 2010 Rowing World Championships

K2010 Limited, the company responsible for the organisation and staging of the 2010 World Rowing Championships at Lake Karapiro, has appointed Thomas Mayo as its Chief Executive Officer.

Thomas was previously Chief Operating Officer for Triathlon New Zealand, where he was responsible for the staging of the ITU World Cup held in New Plymouth as well as the launch and implementation of this country’s first National Triathlon Series

K2010 Chairman Bill Falconer said that while the organising committee for the World Championships included the experience required for a successful regatta, Thomas’ mandate is to ensure that the Championships will also be a splendid event for athletes and their supporters, sponsors, the media, spectators and a worldwide television audience.

Mayo is a former British middle distance runner and competed in the 1,500 metres at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. He progressed from there through sports journalism and sports administration to event management, and has been with Triathlon New Zealand for the past three years. He is delighted to have secured the role, commenting:

“Rowing is enjoying a successful period in the limelight in New Zealand thanks to the success of the national athletes on the world stage. The 2010 World Championships will be an amazing experience for a general public enthusiastic about the sport, and a stunning event for the top athletes who will come here. To ensure we meet both levels of expectation is a major challenge and one I am looking forward to delivering over the next two years.”

Thomas will take up this position on the 19th May 2008.
