Visiting performance artist makes appearance at Pukaha Mt Bruce

The stories of New Zealand’s native plants and animals will be interpreted in dance at the Pukaha Mount Bruce Wildlife Centre on Sunday.

Patricia Bulitt, a Californian interdisciplinary artist, who specialises in telling stories of the natural world in dance, is staging two performances at Pukaha – one among the birds and forests at 2.15pm and another inside the visitor centre at 3.30pm.

Described as a ‘bird lady’ for her interpretation of the Great Egret, Patricia Bulitt is in residence at New Pacific Studio in the Wairarapa for three weeks as the 2008 Anzac Bridge Fellow.

Department of Conservation Pukaha Mount Bruce visitor centre supervisor Kathy Houkamau is excited about the dancer visiting and tuning in to native New Zealand’s flora and fauna.

“This will be the first time the environment at Pukaha Mount Bruce has been interpreted through dance.”

Patricia Bulitt, who is also performing at the bridge close to Pukaha Mt Bruce on Anzac Day, is excited about the opportunity to relate to New Zealand’s natives in the Pukaha setting.

"I'm very passionate about the natural world," Patricia Bulitt said. "It gives me a sense of solace and renewal."

The international visitor is well known in both California and Alaska where she regularly dances, interpreting the trees and birds of the area.
