Maori Television Commemorates Wahine Disaster

Maori Television presents the television premiere of THE WAHINE DISASTER – an extraordinary documentary set to screen 40 years to the day that the Wahine set sail – this Wednesday April 9 at 8.30 PM.

The hour-long programme will make its debut in the New Zealand documentary slot, Pakipumeka Aotearoa. Many of the survivors and rescuers speak for the first time of the fateful day the country’s newest inter-island ferry set out on her overnight journey from Lyttleton to Wellington – and into the eye of one of the most violent storms in the nation’s history.

Every New Zealander should watch THE WAHINE DISASTER – to learn what it is to have the courage to survive, the courage to risk your own lives to save others. They will also learn of the extent of the personal tragedy suffered by so many on that day.

It is a story that has taken years to research and which has remained largely untold – until now. THE WAHINE DISASTER screens only on Maori Television in the New Zealand documentary slot, Pakipumeka Aotearoa, on Wednesday April 9 at 8.30 PM.
