A Pure Talent
"Here On The Ground announces the arrival of a major Kiwi talent," says elsewhere.co.nz's Graham Reid. It's the name of the debut album from Tauranga-raised 24-year-old Luke Thompson, which debuts at #38 this week on the very independent local Pure label.

Singer-songwriter Luke takes inspiration from Don Mclean and Bob Dylan, getting his initial break (as many do) through the Smokefree Rockquest. After studying music, his single Perfect Drive made #17 almost 11 months ago.

And now comes the album recorded at Neil Finn's Roundhead Studios.
Thompson is currently out on the road with Brian Platt under the Midsummer Tour 2008 banner. The pair play Luke's Tauranga hometown on Thursday before moving to Hastings on Friday. Come Sunday he's playing Auckland's Civic with Toto.

More Songs
Kiwis seem to have a particular love for compilations with the word Songs in the title at the moment. Already this year, My Songs has sold platinum and held the pole position for the past six weeks. Now Happy Songs replaces it at #1 and Driving Songs makes it to #4 first week.

The gold-selling former #1 Housework Songs II has just slipped out of the Comps Top10. That's a lot of songs.

The New Single
#33 The Potbelleez - Don't Hold Back
From Dublin, Ireland, to King's Cross, Sydney, Australia come DJs Dave Goods and Jonny Sonic who together are The Potbelleez. They register the only brand new entry on the Singles Chart this week with Don't Hold Back, new at #33. It sits at #9 on this week's ARIA Charts in Oz, having gone Top 5 there previously.

The New Albums
#12 Simple Plan - Simple Plan
Four years back, Canadian five-piece Simple Plan landed their first chart album No Pads, No Helmets...Just Balls, which rose as high as #5. A year later Still Not Getting Any also debuted and peaked at #5. Now Pierre, Jef, Seb, David and Chuck place their self-titled third studio album fresh in at #12. Singleswise, they've landed four hits here with the #5 Welcome To My Life the biggest thus far.

#28 Finger Eleven - Them Vs You Vs Me
The Canadian factor gives a second Canuck Rock new entry this week as Ontario's Finger Eleven land Them vs You vs Me at #28 first week. Meanwhile their Paralyzer single rises three places to #7 on the Singles Chart in its second week. Both Simple Plan and Finger Eleven join k.d. lang, making a trio of acts from north of the border.

#36 Soulja Boy - Souljaboytellem.com
After a string of Single successes, Soulja Boy finally makes the Albums Chart with his debut at #36. On the singles front this week, Yahhh! leads the way, rising to #5, while the platinum-certified Crank That is at #21 and Soulja Girl is #33 this week for 17-year-old DeAndre Ramone Way.
