Every so often in this grey and beige world, one is fortunate enough to meet a person who leaves a lasting impression, someone of such eccentric and creative flair, that they whirl you along in their wild vision of the world, colouring it ever more brightly. In this show we bring together not one but two such people in a creative clash and celebration of confident originality and flair.

David Boyle and Martin Boyle, two Irish, Wellingtonian, whimsical artists lend elements of the Wellington and world we know and love fantastical elements, humour and political commentary.

A feature of this show will be a never before performed act of painting; a demitych whereby David and Martin are going to painting one half of a long canvas each, and paint one element on each side of the other’s painting.
Martin to do first half before being subbed off, then David with a fresh pair of legs to play second half.

‘Professional artists use the front door, Outsider artists go for a chain saw’

Doyle is an artist who is not afraid to experiment and invent new techniques bringing together many styles and materials. His distinctive work displays an expressive use of colour and wild paint, which is brought together and delineated by the use of black lines. There is a sense of extreme movement and action in his paintings, which are influenced by his drawing of comics, journalism and experience working in television.

“I love using a mixture of art techniques which would not normally sit comfortably together. The elements I use are strange bed fellows, but because I am trying to say things which sometimes are difficult to say, having shocking contrast in materials somehow gives me more scope to get away with certain views and impressions of Wellington. It’s like if television suddenly announced it was going to broadcast in 50 languages, the good news is that everyone would have their say.”

“I have been attaching the oils and bolts to books for 11 years now. I find New Zealand still emotionally retarded and I fight this instinct to be reserved and introverted by using the canvas as pure instinctive expression – another world away from this world. I can’t afford overseas trips so this is ample. Painting leaves me to become extremely enlightened.”

Artist, poet, performer, radio show host, his inimitable sense of humour, politics and delight in the odd and subterranean has enlivened our cultural scene for many years. Renowned, recalcitrant pretender to the throne of Cuba St darling, he is a book bolter, forever sealing shut books which should never be reopened.

An eternal recycler, Boyle scavenges props and books along with reworking old paintings into new and wonderful reincarnations. A modern surrealist, Boyle reworks stories and elements of everyday life into his fantastical worlds.
