Auckland Big Day Out - Post Event Summary

The BIG DAY OUT landed in Auckland today for the first event of the 2008 6-stop Australasian series. The Auckland event played to a sold out crowd of 45,000 music fans at Mt Smart Stadium.

Following a joint briefing session held directly after the Auckland Big Day Out event, this information has been compiled in conjunction with representatives of the following organisations.

To the best of our collective knowledge this summary is an accurate and up to date representation of the day's incidents.

*St John Ambulance Service spokesperson Charlotte Guscott reports that the majority of the treatments attended by the service were for minor injuries including headaches, cuts and abrasions, blisters and heat-related injuries after the brilliant weather that Auckland turned out today.

Treatment numbers throughout the day were steady. There were five people transported to hospital for further observation: two of these were drug related, one was an abdominal pain, and two were ankle injuries. These were less serious incidences than previous years.

*Auckland Central Police report there were only 19 arrests, all for minor incidences. Inspector Derek Davidson said that the police were extremely happy with the crowd behaviour and the audience should be complimented for this - "it was a very peaceful event."

Event organisers would like to praise the audience for their amazing co-operation of the ongoing BDO safety initiatives, such as the D-Barrier and not selling herbal pills on the premises, and their consideration of fellow patrons.

From NZ, the BDO crew head straight to Brisbane for the GOLD COAST event on Sunday 20th January, followed by dates in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. The line-up features some of the biggest names in the music world including RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, BJORK, ARCADE FIRE, DIZZEE RASCAL, UNKLE, LCD SOUNDSYSTEM and many, many more.
