*"richly poetic lyrics create a mood that is sometimes dark, sometimes mystical and bordering on the avant-garde."* - NZ Musician Magazine Described by the New Zealand Herald as a "kiwi supergroup," Steve Abel's band, newly named The Chrysalids, has an impressive alt / folk / rock pedigree.
The band is: Geoff Maddock, (Bressa Creeting Cake, Goldenhorse) electric guitar; Mike Hall (Brunettes, Dimmer, Pluto) double bass; Milan Borich (Pluto, Bic Runga band) drums; Gareth Thomas (Goodshirt) accordion.
Debut album Little Death was described as "a hidden treasure in the New Zealand music scene," and named Alternatui Album of the Year in 2006. It embodies the electric alt-folk essence like few albums anywhere. The musical collaboration born has become a hypnotic live outfit.
Steve Abel & The Chrysalids are making their first appearance as a band in the South Island on January 24 (Harbour Light Lyttelton), 25 (Backstage Dunedin with Haunted Love) and 26 (Penguin Club Oamaru) and headlining gigs in Auckland (31 Jan at Kings Arms with Anji Sami and Gareth Thomas Band) and Wellington (1 Feb at Happy with special guests).
Following a two day, 13 song session with Dunedin engineer Dale Cotton at the new Roundhead studio in Auckland, the Chrysalids' new album named Flax Happy is due for release in March 2008 (distributed by Rhythmethod). It includes 12 superb new tracks including one captured with the Texan singer Jolie Holland and another with Anika Moa. The first single from the album Sad Girls is a reflective but uplifting and brief (3:03 mins) homage to melancholic women. Click here to listen and download:http://www.abelsong.com/music/sad-girls
