Hundreds of spectators gathered in Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour today to watch teams of young women serve up a great start to summer at the inaugural Venus Breeze Volleyball Challenge.
Tons of golden sand, beach umbrellas, grandstands and tanned bodies saw the normally concrete-covered Te Wero Island transformed into a beach volleyball court for the event and the usually unpredictable Auckland weather managed to turn on the sunshine.
The highlight of the day was the heated celebrity challenge, which saw TV3’s Pulp Sport hosts Bill and Ben go head-to-head with golden couple Amber Peebles and Brooke Howard-Smith on centre court in the ultimate showdown of beauty versus brawn.
After a sterling effort from both teams, and some interesting displays of beach volleyball skills, it was Bill and Ben who won official bragging rights as the Venus Breeze Volleyball Challenge celebrity winners.
“Let’s just say Amber and Brooke underestimated our sporting prowess. When it comes to beach volleyball, Bill and I know how to work the court and we proved that today by winning the Venus Breeze Volleyball Challenge celebrity title. It seems brawn does win out over beauty,” said Ben.
While Brooke and Amber were disappointed with their loss they were pleased with their performance as a team.
“Although the Venus Breeze ensured our legs had minimal friction, we just couldn’t get the same speed up as Bill and Ben. We played well as a team but I guess it just wasn’t our lucky day. We’ll beat ‘em next time,” said Brooke.
More than 20 teams consisting of up to 10 girls took to the sand-covered courts to compete for $5,000 in prize money. Professional beach volleyball player Anna Scarlett and her team Santa’s Lil Helpers made it through to the final along with team Sweetness. Santa’s Lil Helpers took out the title and the $5,000 prize.
The Venus Breeze Volleyball Challenge was held by Gillette to mark the launch of its newest shave system and aimed to get girls, regardless of their sporting skills, to have a bit of athletic fun in the lead up to summer.
