Running Again In Super Sedan Series
Running Again In Super Sedan Series
Drury driver Dayne Running continued on his winning way at Round 3 of the Schaeffer Oil N.Z. Super Sedan Series at Pukekohe Park Raceway this weekend. Running, the top point scorer at the previous two rounds, won again this weekend to extend his lead in the series. He had qualified his Chev Camaro second fastest on Saturday behind Invercargill driver Glen Brazier and then took a sixth place in the first handicap race yesterday afternoon. This morning Running took the Camaro to second place behind Brazier in a rolling start, scratch grid event and ended the round with a win in the final race, another handicap event this afternoon. In his drive this afternoon Running brought the Camaro from second-to-last in the big field to take the victory.
Brazier and Te Puke driver Peter Stewart in his Mk 5 Cortina Chev finished the weekend tied on points to share second place for the round. After qualifying on pole Brazier found his handicap too severe in Saturday afternoon's first race and brought his Corvette through to eighth place. On Sunday morning he won the scratch race and then in this afternoon's handicap he managed to fight his way to fourth place at the chequered flag. Stewart had an excellent weekend finishing third in this afternoon's handicap race to add to an earlier sixth plus a fifth place yesterday, good enough to equal the southerner's tally.
Meanwhile George Sheweiry of Auckland, having his first outing of the season in his ex-David Steel Chev Camaro, scored a fourth and a fifth placing today to complement his second placing yesterday. Sheweiry amassed enough points to finish fourth in the round.
This morning's eight lap race went
to Brazier as he scorched to a new lap record for the class
of 56.749 seconds at the 2.84 kilometre South Auckland
circuit. Running was second with Aucklander Roger Williams
third in his Oldsmobile Aurora. The race featured a nasty
incident when defending series champion Grant Brennan of
Tauranga spun his Brennan Corvette SB2 in the esses and
North Shore driver Greg Gillespie hit the car. Gillespie
failed to finish the race while the Saturday race winner
Wayne Conder and third fastest
qualifier Andy Greenslade
were also among the non-finishers.
The final race this afternoon saw another great race with Running doing a fine job to make his way through the traffic to win. Waitara driver Ross Calgher in his Dodge Viper was second with Stewart third in the Cortina. The first five cars across the line were separated by less than six seconds at the chequered flag providing a great spectacle for the crowd.
Andy Greenslade had an altercation with the Nissan of Nigel Snow during the race sending the Greenslade Mustang spinning down the back straight, fortunately without making contact with anything.
Auckland driver Wayne Conder won the opening race on Saturday in his Chev Camaro from Sheweiry. Orewa driver Mike Parsons was third in his Ford Falcon V8. The fastest qualifiers, Glen Brazier of Invercargill, championship leader Dayne Running of Drury plus Tauranga drivers Andy Greenslade and Grant Brennan found their handicaps too tough to overcome with Running faring best with a sixth place.
Greg Gillespie and Mark Heimgartner both had spins during the race, fortunately without damage.
The series resumes in the New Year when Round 4 takes place at Manfeild Autocourse in Feilding over the weekend of 2/3 February.
Major sponsor of the series, Schaeffer Oil, has primary markets in the fields of earthmoving, trucking and agriculture and they view this series as the perfect test environment for their high performance racing products.
