ARTSPACE Billboard Project by Reuben Paterson
The second billboard project by ARTSPACE in partnership with the Langham Hotel is now up on the corner of Karangahape Road and Symonds Street. ARTSPACE uses the Langham Hotel’s billboard for contemporary art projects. The space measures 22,5 x 4 metres and provides an opportunity for the invited artists to work on a massive scale, in a new medium and in a context outside of the gallery walls.
Auckland artist Reuben Paterson (Ngati Rangitihi, Tuhourangi) has created a new work specifically for this project. The billboard captures Paterson’s use of theatre foil in a playful light-reflecting and undulating panel of stripes.
ARTSPACE director Brian Butler says, “When I was thinking about various artists to invite for the billboard project, I always thought that Reuben could work on such a massive scale. The way his new work plays between abstraction, Pop and Op art is perfectly communicated.”
ARTSPACE is the leading non-profit contemporary art institution in Auckland With a mission to challenge, inspire and educate the makers and readers of contemporary culture, the new billboard project takes ARTSPACE out into the public space.
ARTSPACE would like to thank photographer Jennifer French and acknowledge the generous support of the Langham Hotel, Omnigraphics, Billboard Solutions, Gow Langsford Gallery and Karangahape Road Business Association.
