Doyle Glass Acquisition Prize

The 2007 recipient of the Doyle Glass Acquisition Prize is Keith Grinter, a graduating Whanganui UCOL Bachelor of Fine Arts (glass) student. Keith receives $750 from Doyle and Associates the Accountants, who accession the winning piece of work, in this case a hand painted blown glass vessel, into the Doyle Corporate Collection.

Titled Nude after Modigliani, the vessel was part of Keith’s graduating exhibition themed the Spirit of Modernism. Keith said that through most of history, artists learned their trade by working with the masters. “For over a century in the West, Modernism turned that process on its head, rejecting what had gone before. In doing so they created a new tradition on which we can now draw”. His exhibition was a shrine to the Spirit of Modernism, to the pioneers that created this new tradition of art.

This is the third year the Doyle Acquisition Prize has been awarded. Matthew Doyle of Doyle and Associates said “I have always admired the work of glass students at Whanganui UCOL and believe what they produce is fantastic. Offering the acquisition prize means that both parties benefit – Doyle and Associates are building a great collection of student glass work, and the students are financially rewarded and professionally recognized for their efforts.”

Keith plans to apply to study his Masters in Design with AUT, available through Whanganui UCOL. He sold four pieces from his end of year exhibition and is hoping to offer his work for sale in Auckland and Taupo. Tamarillo in Wellington and Pataka, the City Gallery in Porirua are already showcasing his glass pieces.
