New Zealand’s favourite gardening magazine is moving from plot to pantry, helping green-fingered Kiwis not only grow but also pickle and preserve the fruits of their labour.
New Zealand Gardener has produced a new 130-page collector’s edition - NZ Gardener Homegrown - with tips, information and recipes for making the most of seasonal produce from plot to pantry.
NZ Gardener Homegrown has grown out of editor Lynda Hallinan’s public year-long quest for self-sufficiency from an urban garden. Growing the produce was easy, she says, cooking it all was less so.
“My cookbook collection swelled, as did the collection of pickles and preserves in my pantry. Many thanks to the New Zealand Gardener readers who generously shared their family recipes to help me out.”
NZ Gardener Homegrown reproduces those

ecipes, as well as recipes submitted by celebrities and
some Hallinan family favourites. Tomato relish, apricot jam
and fig chutney - all the old favourites, and some new and
exciting variations, are included.
Hallinan says NZ Gardener Homegrown is a guide to everything gardeners and home cooks need to grow and preserve their own delicious produce. It includes information on sourcing heritage plants, what grows best where, and even how to collect surplus fruit and vegetables from friends and neighbours.
With a chapter for every month of the year, it guides readers through what they should be sowing, growing, harvesting, pickling and preserving as the year progresses, then provides delicious recipes to make the most of their seasonal bounty.
NZ Gardener Homegrown, the collector’s edition, is available from 19 November in supermarkets and booksellers. It has a RRP of $14.90.
