TIKI – ‘Past, Present, Future’ Win it all next
week.
Pick yourself up the highly anticipated solo album
from Tiki Taane. Tiki emerges from the studio with Past,
Present, Future, his first solo offering, that is musically
fearless, intensely personal and culturally significant.
This album is the culmination of a musical journey that has
already spanned more than a decade. "I feel like I've
completed a fifteen-year apprenticeship," Taane reflects.
"But I've never worked so hard, ventured so deep or asked so
much of myself as I did during the production of this album.
It feels like a graduation."...Win ‘Past, Present,
Future’ all next week at 8.15am on breakfast & 5.15pm on
drive from the 19th November.
5 - DALE COTTON ON THE LOCAL
– Thurs 15th November
This week The Local hosts highly
regarded sound engineer Dale Cotton in the studio. Having
come to prominence as the 'fourth member' of High Dependency
Unit, his recording (and engineering) talents have been in
demand by New Zealand's discerning underground and has lead
to recording the likes of Die! Die! Die! and (more recently)
Hannah Curwood. 2003 Also saw the release of his first solo
record under the moniker Conray, a surprising blend to those
of us expecting something more akin to what he was known for
recording from other bands. Dale was also head hunted to
remaster the infamously gutless Toy Love album, which he
lists as a career highlight. We'll try to find out his other
favourite New Zealand music when he joins us live in the
studio this Thursday. Join Dale Cotton on The Local with
Dave, Thursday the 15th November from 7-9pm
6 - OLD
FANGLED ACTION - NAS
Tune into the Friday morning
Spectrum this week. Amy Joseph holds down the sliders &
plays the sweetest of songs. Then, come 11am, Boof jumps
in to present this weeks edition of ‘Old Fangled’ –
this week taking a look at Nas’ stunning debut album
‘Illmatic’. Nasir Jones made this first record at the
age of 20, already armed with the calm perceptiveness and
been-there-done-that attitude of a much older ghetto vet.
Illmatic is a look back at a life spent in the culture of
the projects, acknowledging joy as much as pain and taking
note of violence as a fact of his environment rather than a
focus of his life. It's enlivened by Nas's kicky,
deep-threaded multiple rhymes and cameos from a bunch of
all-stars, including the Large Professor, DJ Premier, and,
most memorably, Q-Tip ("One Love"). --*Douglas Wolk

NATURAL SELECTION – ‘Australian Gothic’ w/ Paul
Ramaeker. Sunday 18th November, 6 – 8pm,
This Sunday,
Paul Ramaeker guides you through the dark world of
Australian Gothic, the post-punk movement that draws
inspiration from the literature and music of the American
Deep South.
The twisted tour starts in the late seventies
with groups like The Triffids and The Scientists, before
visiting The Dirty Three, The Drones and bands beyond
Australia influenced by the genre. Above it all looms the
dark spectre of Nick Cave, from The Birthday Party to The
Bad Seeds. Join Paul on the Australian Gothic Natural
Selection from 6-8pm on Radio One this Sunday, for a trip
through Southern Gothic music from the great
southern
land.

LIVE SESSIONS – Thurs 22nd November / 3.30pm – QUARTER
ACRE LIFESTYLE
The Red Bull Live Sessions stream every
week across the bNet from the fancy Red Bull Studios in AK.
Next week – Quarter Acre Lifestyle. Quarter Acre Lifestyle
was founded in New Zealand by two brothers, drummer Aaron
and bassist Cameron Pollock. In 2000, Aaron moved to the US
and the band consequently became a global effort. Since
recording a self-titled album in Minneapolis, Minnesota in
early 2006, their music has evolved into a sound they can
call their own in a brand-new second album, Blood on the
Lawn. The bands influences range from Massive Attack and
Portishead, to Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails and Brian
Eno.
