Creating a buzz in the CBD’s Living Room
Creative ways to enliven the CBD are being sought as part of Auckland City Council’s 2008 Living Room programme, scheduled to run from mid-April to mid-June.

The Living Room programme promotes the concept of Auckland’s CBD as a shared urban ‘living room’ and offers the public colourful and unexpected activities in the streets of the CBD.

The chairperson of the council’s Arts, Community and Recreation Committee, Councillor Greg Moyle, says the council is looking for submissions that cover a range of options, including events, performances and installations.

“Most importantly, we’re looking for imaginative and playful concepts that trigger a response from the public to stop, look, listen and become involved.

“We want to create a CBD that’s fun and exciting. Initiatives like the Living Room help generate life and buzz in the inner city,” says Mr Moyle.

The events and/or installations will be in place from one to eight weeks at selected sites in the CBD.

Last year’s Living Room series saw public spaces in the CBD come alive with a range of stimulating experiences. Highlights included Auckestrated Moves by Pacific Echoes, an interactive musical experience that was directed by the public at Freyberg Place, and Baby where are the fine things you promised me? by Stephen Bain, which involved the artist ‘living’ inside a miniature suburban house and interacting with passers-by through games of Scrabble, cups of tea and music.

Living Room is funded by the CBD targeted rate and is a key action from Auckland's CBD Into the Future strategy, which aims to transform Auckland’s CBD into a dynamic and vibrant centre of cultural and business activity.
