‘Festival with a difference’ exceeds all expectations
Hundreds of people roamed the streets of the normally quiet seaside village of Seatoun last Sunday for a festival with a
difference. Gardens, music, art and food combined with the first real glimpse of summer to make the first Seatoun Garden & Art Festival an incredible success – and one that organisers say will definitely be repeated.
Organising committee chair Selena Natoli said the unique mix of attractions exceeded her expectations as well as those
of visitors. “People told us we had created quite a different experience. They loved the laid back atmosphere and the
fact they could enjoy food, wine, art and music in some wonderful environments, all at their leisure. This was a first
time for us but the feedback has been so positive we’ll definitely be doing it again.”
Sixteen of Seatoun’s best gardens were open to visitors on the day. As well as showcasing a range of garden designs,
they also provided a fitting environment for visitors to view works by local Wellington artists and listen to musicians
including jazz band Night Train and classical ensemble Strung out Strings. Visitors could also enjoy gourmet food and
boutique wines during the garden trail. A double decker London bus added to the festival atmosphere, ferrying those who
needed a lift or a fun ride around Seatoun streets all afternoon – much to the delight of children.
The festival was held to raise funds for books and IT equipment for the local St. Anthony’s school. Selena Natoli says
it will be held on a bi-annual basis. “With the success of the first festival we are hoping to attract a sponsor to help
us make the next one even more successful. It was a fantastic day and we think it can become a ‘must-do’ event in
Wellington.”
