Desiree Dolron’s photography is collected by the Guggenheim in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. From 9 November her acclaimed series te di todos mis suenos will be shown at Suite in Newtown; the first time Dolron’s work has been exhibited in the Southern Hemisphere.

Some might call that a coup, Suite’s owner David Alsop puts it down to good relationships. While living in Amsterdam, David developed his interest in European art by exploring the art scene around him; both old European and contemporary works. Dutch-born Dolron’s work stood out for it’s presence, brilliance, and technical mastery. He met the artist through a friend and they hit if off.

This year David and his family returned to New Zealand.

“Owning a gallery was something that was always in the back of my mind,” he says.

“I love art, and through networks of friends I’ve continued to develop my appreciation. When I came home I saw a gap in the market for a gallery selling quality contemporary works alongside old European masterpieces, which is exactly what Suite does.”

The Dolron exhibition opens on Friday 9 November. Five works have already sold, with prices ranging from $16,500 to $34,000.

“You really need to see Dolron’s works in person to appreciate the qualities and power of her work,” says David. “They are truly stunning and it’s easy to get lost in the atmosphere and the magic.”

Desiree Dolron created te di todos mis suenos as part of an extensive reportage in 2002 around the deprived areas of Cuba.
