exhibition runs 12 October - 2 December 2007
DeAnne Lawford-Smith from Taupo took the top prize worth $12,000 with Keeping Quiet and Heart of Glass. ³Ideas for mysculptures come from ancient clay and stone fertility figures. I also like showing a comparison between female and vessel forms, combining the two into one whole. While the exterior form is static, I like to give a sense of an inner dimension and personality. The textures and colours allude to the thermal and volcanic nature of the central plateau where I live. I also incorporate shell, fern and koru symbols on the surface of the forms, which show a link to the New Zealand land and seascape.²
The Portage Licensing Trust and The Trusts Charitable Foundation continue their growing support with prize money totalling $20,000. The other award winners are:
John Parker, John Green Waitakere Artist Award Winner for Lattice Bowl.
Greg Barron, Merit Award Winner for Altered Vase with Crackle Pattern.
