New Zealand Academy of Sport North Island appoints new Board Members
The New Zealand Academy of Sport North Island (NZAS North Island) has appointed 3 dynamic new Board members. Paul
Cameron, Barrie Mabbott and Paul Veric were confirmed at the NZAS North Island AGM last week, with all three having
extensive sporting backgrounds as both athletes and administrators over many years.
Paul Cameron is the Chief Executive of Sport Wellington Region and a former board member of the NZAS Central Region.
Cameron is currently on the board of the Halberg Trust and Sports Clubs of New Zealand, Paul is a previous national
soccer representative and provincial age group cricket player.
Barrie Mabbott is a previous board member and High Performance Commissioner for Rowing NZ, in addition to roles with
North Shore and Auckland Rowing, and sitting on the Auckland Regional Performance Centre Board of Directors. Now a
successful businessman, Mabbott is an Olympic bronze medallist and Commonwealth bronze and silver medallist rower.
Wellington-based Paul Veric recently resigned as CEO of Swimming NZ to return to Surf Life Saving NZ in a consultancy
role. Previous roles for Veric include Development Manager at Surf Life Saving NZ and CEO of Sport Eastland. Paul has
also been a NZ representative in Sprint Kayaking, a Surf Life Saving national title holder and a national selector.
Warwick Nicoll, Chair of the NZAS North Island Board, said, “We are delighted with the new appointments who bring to the
Board table experiences at the top level of sport as well as being representative of sporting interests throughout the
North Island.”
Warwick also paid tribute to the retiring members Janet MacKay and Hugh McGahan for their contribution to the Board and
the Academy.
NZAS North Island is part of SPARC’s high performance network providing support to elite athletes and coaches.
