Primary School Helps NZ Chefs Celebrate International Chefs Day
Chefs from around Auckland will be turning out in force to serve lunch to 150 pupils at Onepoto Primary School in Northcote this Friday (19 October) to officially celebrate International Chefs Day.
President of the Auckland Branch of the New Zealand Chefs Association, Gordon Campbell, said International Chefs Day was started two years ago by the World Association of Chefs’ Societies (WACS).
“It is now celebrated around the globe by the majority of WACS member countries including New Zealand,” he said.
“Most countries use the day as an opportunity to get together and have some fun and, more importantly, get involved in socially responsible initiatives within their communities. It’s also a day in which we pay tribute to the chef profession.
“Last year the NZCA hosted for the first time, the WACS Congress which attracted over 500 chefs from around the globe to New Zealand.
“This year we wanted to mark International Chefs Day with grassroots activities that have a local flavour.”
Noted dietitian and NZCA member, Pip Duncan, has designed a healthy, nutritionally balanced lunch that will be prepared by the 30 chefs on Friday and served up to Oneopoto School pupils.
“We’re enthusiastic about the opportunity to do something that is both fun and educational for the school,” Gordon said.
“We’ll be talking to the children about healthy eating, while they’re served a nutritious lunch served by 15 chefs replete in full uniform.
“It will also be a great opportunity for the pupils to see a chef up close and find out more about what chefs do.”
Aside from the chefs donating their time, an array of suppliers are also donating food and produce including: Pierre’s Bakery, Fresh Connection, The Sprout Man, and Craddock Family Farm Eggs.
