Foo-Wee
It's been claimed that, per capita, Foo
Fighters sell more albums here than anywhere else in the
world. Well, it seems quite feasible this week as
Echoes, Silence, Patience And Grace blasts straight
to the top of the Albums chart with the biggest opening week
tally of 2007, and is certified platinum out of the
box!
The Dave Grohl-led quartet achieves their
third consecutive #1 album here, all of which have opened in
the pole position.
Echoes is the band's sixth
studio album and seventh charter since their 1995 #2
self-titled debut. All of those records have gone Top 10
except for their 1999 third release There Is Nothing Left
To Lose, which only made it to #12.
The Foos are no
slugs singleswise either. They've nine hits to their
credit, although they're yet to crack the Top 10. Their
highest charter was their 1995 debut This Is A Call
which knocked on the door, stopping at #11.
The lead
single from the new album, The Pretender, sits at #15
this week and is #5 on the RadioScope100.
Britney’s
Back
The news on the homefront is all bad for
Britney Spears.
But fans being what they are, and
any publicity being good publicity, the instant download
world appears to be paying off as she snares her first hit
in almost three years. Her ‘comeback’ single Gimme
More enters this week’s Singles Chart at #24.
Brit
hits began in 1999 when her first song, Baby One More
Time, made #1 - a feat she repeated twice more with
Sometimes (also in 1999) and 2000's Oops… I Did
Again.
Of her 14 hit singles, the most recent was
2004’s #17 Bobby Brown cover My Prerogative,
taken from her Greatest Hits package. (Also the last
time she hit the Albums list).
There are no chart-toppers
among her five hit albums, but the first two came close (#3
with Baby One More Time and #2 with Oops... I Did
Again).
There's a new release, Pieces Of Me,
scheduled for release later in the year. Or early next
maybe, depending how the rest of her life is panning
out.
The New Singles
#18 Alicia Keys -
No One
Six years back, the then 20-year-old Alicia
Keys took her debut single all the way to the top.
Fallin' spent three weeks on top and went on to be
covered by many an Idol wannabe. Now with her first new
recordings in nearly four years, Alicia grabs highest new
entry honours at #18 with No One, the lead single
from the November due As I Am album.
#24 Britney
Spears - Gimme More
See story above.
#34
Chamillionaire - Hip Hop Police
After three
hits last year including his biggest, the #2 Ridin'
(a hook-up with Kiwi rapper Tyree),
Chamillionaire nabs his fourth charter as Hip Hop
Police arrives at #34. Its parent album, Ultimate
Victory, drops later in the year and features help from
another of this week's debutants, Alicia Keys.
#36 Gwen
Stefani featuring Damian Marley - Now That You Got
It
It's leg's eleven for recent tourist and No
Doubt lead vocalist Gwen Stefani with the fourth hit
culled from The Sweet Escape. This time she gets
help from one of Bob Marley's sons as Damian
Marley gains his first ever New Zealand chart
appearance.
The New Albums
#1 Foo
Fighters - Echoes, Silence, Patience And
Grace
See story above.
#33 Jose Gonzalez -
In Our Nature
There are three Joses who've charted
albums here – tenor Jose Carreras, Jose Feliciano and
Swedish-born Jose Gonzalez. Last years the latter’s
Veneer LP spent half a year in the list, peaking at
#11. A track from that record, Heartbeats, provided
the Sony Bravia TV ad soundtrack. This week his sophomore
effort, In Our Nature, drops in at #33.
#38
Eddie Vedder - Into The Wild
The
42-year-old Pearl Jam lead singer gains his first solo hit
album as his Into The Wild movie soundtrack moves
into the survey at #38. As part of Pearl Jam, the Seattle
native has been part of 16 hit singles and 14 chart albums,
including five #1s.
