Music Conference 2007
Top New Zealand musicians and music industry heavyweights will gather next week (Thursday, Oct 11) to pave the way for the next generation of talent.
The event is a first - the brainchild of Waipareira Trust CEO, John Tamihere - and has been in the planning since early this year.
“Local authorities have dropped the ball with music and its’ importance to our youth,” says Tamihere.
“It’s where young people willingly put their energy. Music is their life, and the downstream benefits are enormous both career-wise and for the wider community.”
The day-long event will see artists of the calibre of Chong Nee, Tingi Ness, P.N.C and K.D Lok perform. That’s the fun part for fans but it will be hard yards for those truly intent on pursuing a musical career.
“They’ve been doing karaoke, winning competitions, just being good singers. On Thursday they’ll find out ‘where to next?’ from the industry, and if they have the talent and determination for one of the toughest industries there is.”
New Zealand On Air, Record company bosses, recording studio managers, entertainment lawyers, radio and music TV heads – from here and Australia - have willingly committed to the day, which will also see a database of potential stars and industry experts finally set up.
“The music
industry obviously sees something in this for them as well.
It’s plain logic,” says Tamihere.
The event will be opened by the Hon. Parekura Horomia. Minister of Maori Affairs.
