Auckland Photo Blog celebrates one year online

Auckland photographers have the chance to celebrate a new theme marking the first anniversary of Auckland Photo Blog during October.

The popular online community meeting place was launched on October 6 last year by the Auckland Festival of Photography.

It aims to provide a free platform for local photographers of all ages and experience to digitally display their best images of their environment, people and places around Auckland region.

The anniversary theme for the whole month of October will be Architecture. Full entry details are posted on the Festival website and the photograph chosen as October Photo of The Month will win a Olympus digital camera worth approx $250.

Festival organiser Julia Durkin says images of local architecture have always been a popular choice for blog enthusiasts.

Festival spokesperson Julia Durkin says the ASB Community Trust has generously agreed to support the Festival for a second year. “The Trust’s backing is a huge vote of support for the festival,” she says.

Around 30,000 people attended Festival events and exhibitions in 2007, making this year’s event the most successful on record.

Anyone wishing to show their work during 2008 should contact the festival, either by email (akl.festival.photography@xtra.co.nz) or phone 09 307-7055.

Triangle TV

One of the highlights of this year’s June festival was a talk and presentation by Greenpeace at Auckland Art Gallery. The environmental campaigners showed many dramatic archive images to illustrate the importance of photography as a tool in their international campaigning.

Photography enthusiasts who missed the exclusive Greenpeace talk will have another opportunity to see it on Triangle Television during October.

Edited highlights of the presentation (focusing on New Zealand photography and events) will screen on Triangle Television at 7.30pm on Thursday the 4th of October.

Triangle Television will also be involved in the next year’s festival. During the 2008 event, Triangle will be broadcasting a series of profiles on exhibiting photographers and their work.

The TV shorts will screen in a new programme called Festival TV. The Auckland Festival of Photography will produce the new series.
