SMART DRIVING BY HARTLEY IN
FRANCE
Brendon Hartley has consolidated his Eurocup
Formula Renault 2.0 championship lead with a third place
yesterday at the Magny-Cours circuit in France.
With persistent heavy rain all afternoon, the track was drenched by the time Race 1 got underway and remained wet in large patches for Race 2. Qualifying in pole position for both races, Hartley clocked the fastest lap in Race 2 as well as third place – gaining him valuable championship points.
Hartley was taken out of Race 1 on lap 6, just as he looked set to secure a fifth race win. Charles Pic of France inherited the lead, but could not hold off local lad Mattieu Arzeno for long.
‘At this stage of the season, I have to concentrate on keeping my lead in the championship, says Hartley. “My aim was to finish the second race and score as many points as possible.”
With such a mature approach it is no wonder the 17 year old now leads the Eurocup championship by a whopping 44 points.
