New Race for Cycle Enthusiasts

New Race for Cycle Enthusiasts

Tarmac lovers are building up for New Zealand’s newest and most scenic cycle race at Twizel.  The 4 Lakes - Tekapo Canal Road Race début is to take place on Sunday 21st October and is part of the Labour Weekend line up of sporting events in the Mackenzie region over the long weekend.

The 136km race starts in Twizel with the course taking cyclists past Lake Ruataniwha along the canals to Lake Ohau, then touches Lake Pukaki, with the awe inspiring Mount Cook in the background. Cyclists will sweep through this stunning region and ride along the side of Lake Pukaki, then rejoin the canal road passing the Mt Cook Salmon Farm on the way.  During the second half of the race participants pedal their way to Lake Tekapo and then loop back to Twizel.  Some lightening fast times are predicted for this stage of the race as cyclists take advantage of the long downhill gradient to the finish line.

Cycling continues to grow from strength to strength in New Zealand with increasing popularity in racing and recreational cycling. Bloody Good Events race organiser Hamish Paterson saw a gap in the market for a cycle race in the Mackenzie region. “Kiwis really enjoy cycling and the 4 Lakes provides something for everyone, with all ages and competitor levels encouraged to participate and experience this stunning course” says Paterson.

General Manager of Destination Mount Cook Mackenzie, Karen Mullaly says “The 4 Lakes race offers participants stunning scenery of the Mackenzie Basin including a breathtaking backdrop of the Southern Alps and Aoraki Mount Cook”.

The action packed sporting Labour Weekend is shaping up to be bigger than ever with race organisers feeling a great buzz around all of the events that are being held over the long weekend.

“The Labour Weekend sporting events bring with them significant economic impact for the Mackenzie District, not just the large number of people competing and supporting them but also through profiling the region throughout New Zealand” says Mullaly.

Eager kayakers will line up on Saturday for the South Island Kayak Sprint Championships at the Twizel Rowing Centre and on Sunday the Meridian Energy Kayak Challenge takes place on what is regarded as the premier kayak course of New Zealand, the Ohau Hydro Canals. For those that want to keep to racing on dry land the Twizel Pyramid Run and Come Ride The Dusky Trail mountain bike race are set to draw a competitive crowd again this year.

Bloody Good Events have thought of it all and have even organised a live screening of the Rugby World Cup Final at the Twizel Events Centre in anticipation of watching an All Blacks’ victory prior to Sunday’s events.
