The School Of Rock... NZ Styles

Q: What do THE MINT CHICKS, THE D4, CONCORD DAWN and GOLDENHORSE all have in common?
A: They've all had members pass through the studios of the Music and Audio Institute of New Zealand - MAINZ

Throughout the years, the MAINZ institute has drawn a bright collection of students to the Auckland and Christchurch campuses, to study a range of courses whose curriculums stand at the forefront of the ever changing contemporary music scene.

While the likes of The Mint Chicks, The D4, Concord Dawn and Goldenhorse have seen their works enthusiastically received abroad, a newer wealth of young talent have also emerged from the institute in recent years and are ready to take the scene by storm.

White Birds and Lemons are about to embark on an excursion to Australia, The Bengal Lights, who opened for legendary grunge group Dinosaur Jr. during their show in Auckland earlier this year and current UK indie favorites The Checks have all seen members of their bands study at MAINZ before entering the music business. In some cases, most notably The Vacants and The Twitch, the band members all met and began their careers as musicians during their studies at MAINZ.

The tutors heading the eight full time courses on offer at MAINZ are also a roll call of some of New Zealand's finest musicians and industry aficionados: Hello Sailor's Harry Lyon is head of the Contemporary Music department; session drummer Josh Sorenson is a tutor in this department also; Angus McNaughton, a tutor of Audio Engineering and Music Production, was involved in the production of albums by Che Fu and Sola Rosa and John Quigley, programme co-coordinator of the exciting, revised Creative Enterprise course, is the guitarist of New Zealand's finest jazz ensemble, The Nairobi Trio.
