Mobile Music Achievers Honoured
Top local and international musicians were recognised for their achievements in the mobile music market last night (29 August) at the Telecom Mobile Music Awards.
The awards celebrate the number of tracks downloaded as Ringtones, Caller Tunes or full tracks that an artist has achieved over the previous 12 months.
One of the stand-out awards of the night was a Digital Achievement award presented to P-Money. The award celebrated his outstanding role in the production and performance of music that has sold in excess of 30,000 copies through Telecom NZ Mobile Music services.
The award for Highest Selling NZ Single (Music Store) went to the Mt Raskill Preservation Society featuring Hollie Smith for their legendary track 'Bathe in the River'.
Brooke Fraser scored most Popular NZ artist (Ringtone and Caller Tune) and took home the award for Highest Selling Ringtone and Caller Tune (NZ) with her chart topping track 'Deciphering Me' (a jpeg photo of Brooke Fraser is attached).
Disbanding local group Blindspott, fresh on the heels of their farewell tour, took home the Telecom Music Store Award for Most Popular Artist (NZ).
Top selling artist Akon was honored for the Highest Selling Single for his song 'Smack That' and was also awarded most Popular Overall Artist (International).
The growth in the mobile music market has this year seen digital full track downloads for mobile included for the first time in the official count for the RIANZ Music chart. The Telecom Mobile Music Awards further acknowledges the strength of full track downloads Ring tones and Caller Tunes as a measure of an artist's popularity.
18 Gold and Platinum awards were presented for tracks that have been downloaded over 5,000 and 10,000 times respectively.
"Mobile technology is transforming the way we listen to music," said Telecom's Head of Content, Carolyn McKenzie.
"Customers not only want their music on the go, they want to be able to download it immediately, without the complication of computer cables and synchronizing their device. They expect music not only to be portable, but they want it on a device they can also use to talk, text, pay for parking, take pictures and shoot and watch videos," said Ms McKenzie.
GLOSSARY
Full Track: Full length singles and albums downloaded from the Telecom Music Store to mobile.
Ring tones: Music downloaded to act as your mobile's ring.
Caller Tunes: Caller Tunes change the ringing tone people hear when they ring you, so instead of hearing the standard ringing tone, they'll hear a song or sound before you answer your mobile.
